Why I’m not promoting the BIG LAUNCHES

UPDATE:  Since this blog post first came out I’ve added a twitter retweet tool – please give me some twitter love —–>

If you subscribe to other Internet Marketing newsletters besides mine you are about to get swamped with offers…look out! Grab your mouse and get ready to click the delete button 487 times on the SAME OFFER.

Internet superstar __Insert Guru Name__ and his hot off the presses “___Insert Catchy Big Launch Product Name__” is launching soon and it’s SUPER MEGA HOT sprinkled with AWESOME SAUCE.  The videos have all been SO COOL, the BUZZ IS MASSIVE, it’s only here for a few days…and then it’s gone forever!!

(fill in the blank with ANY Internet guru and any big launch product and then continue reading…)

I kid you not – this is THE BIG ONE based on all the email I’m getting!! It must be awesome!

I’m sure what I’m about to say will be misunderstood by some peers and even some readers of this blog, but I’m not sure I care too much about that because ultimately I do only what I believe is right.  It’s not often that I get invited to the “big important guys only” club meetings anyway so I’m not taking too big of a risk here…

Bottom line:
I’m seriously NOT going to promote ___Big Launch Product Here__ course or any of the other “mega launches” coming down the pike!
*Gasp*

…and I want your feedback and thoughts on the matter. Am I killing my career or making a smart call on this one?

Before I go further I need to clarify how I made this decision.

Have I made this decision because…

o I think every launch is a scam?

o I don’t like the guys behind these launches?

o I think the claims are over stated?

o I’m just trying to distinguish myself? (I’m sure I’ll be accused of that one)

o I don’t like the MEGA FAT commission check I could make? I mean come on, my mailing list consists of over 100,000 DOUBLE OPT IN subscribers – many of whom would likely be an easy sell on any given launch!  I’ve proven I TOTALLY KICK BUTT when I promote something.

The answer to all the above questions is NO.

I don’t care if you believe me or not really. My “yes” means “yes” and my “no” means “no”. I’m one of “those” guys.

Actually, you may have noticed over the past several years that I’m not often on board nearly ANY of the BIG LAUNCHES and here’s why…

Most launches don’t pass “the test”.

Yep – that’s right, there are a couple very simple tests I use when deciding whether I’ll promote ANY product or idea.

Grab a pen and paper…this is really good stuff!

First, we have what I’ll call the “two month factor”.

In two months, IF this SUPER HOT, KILLER, GAME CHANGING idea is STILL KICKING BUTT and TAKING NAMES then I’ll check it out myself, test it, and perhaps promote it.

OBJECTION: “But Jim, but Jim, what if the opportunity is saturated by then? You’ve missed out right?”

Nope. The people that missed out will be those that are willing to settle for two months of possible success followed by a saturated opportunity that they have to walk away from so they can start a whole new tail chasing adventure looking for the next “shiny object” or “magic bullet”.

Meanwhile, those of us with a little discipline and patience will have set up whole new long term streams of income using only PROVEN strategies.

Is that making sense? You might have to read it twice, but it really does make sense if you put your thinking cap on and then re-read it.

NEXT OBJECTION: “But Jim, but Jim, what if they only let in a few people and you miss out?”

I’ve been around long enough to know two things. One – they always “re-open” the doors, and two, great ideas can’t be “hidden” behind a membership site. They get out. The masses will know the secrets soon enough. I’ve had 20 or so “copy-cats” write different versions of my ideas and sell them. I still win out though because I out market and out “care”, but that’s another article entirely.

The next test is the, “would I eagerly tell my friends and family about it?” test.

Treat your subscribers like you treat your friends.

There aren’t many launches that pass that test. I wait for the “fall out” to see what results the “little people” are having first. That’s when I get excited.

o Does the server crash in the first week leading to massive refund requests?

o Does the customer support stink?

o Are there questionable legal issues that pop up?

o Is it really easy for the “little guy”, or do you need an army of help to get it done?

o Does the “guru” disappear to the Bahama’s with all the launch cash leaving his customers begging for refunds?

The answers to those questions become clear within a couple months.

Nearly all the “gurus” I’ve met are awesome talented people and a brilliant marketers. I’m sure they won’t care that little ‘ol Jim sat their launch out for now.

But, I fully plan to wait and see what the online world says in two months after each one of them…

Be sure to leave me a comment (link above). Do you think I’m nuts? Is this just a publicity stunt? Do you appreciate my honesty? Speak up…I want your honest (brutal or kind) feedback.

I agree with you about waiting. I am having a hard time learning the business and when I keep getting hit with all these new things I want to buy them but then realize it is a marketing strategy to buy it and make you think you cannot wait. I respect your honesty and between you and Mike have felt the most trust in the two of you than I have for any of the others. Even Mike tho has put out marketing plans that said we would not see again and a month later it is back. I do not know yet if you have done that. I hope your lessons and Mikes will help me but gets pretty frustrating when you do not know much about the computor let alone ebay and what you are teaching. We get hit with so many emails and some are just different versions of the same thing that I do not know who to follow. I got so frustrated I put everything on hold. I have a lot of health problems so can only work at home. Hopefully tho I have set new goals to start back up by the end of this month and will start fresh. I have never answered you or any blog before either. I do respect your honesty and hope and pray you are the real deal. Because you do sound like someone who really cares and does remember where they started from. Keep up the friends and honesty tho and I wish you the best. Thank you

Jim – Re: STEP BY STEP: Sorry to post this here, but I've noticed it's harder and harder to get a hold of you (as you, albeit admiringly, become more successful), kindly reply!

1.) Although you stand by your offer of a refund (which I do trust), the TOS/User agreement of the actual Step by Step profit program says 'no refunds under any circumstances)!

    ALSO

2.) Much of the strategies/implementations of the Step by Step program were written/recorded by the company's founders *last year*, and it appears to be BEFORE Google implemented their landing page URL display policy (where your display URL in your Adwords AD MUST match the URL of the actual landing page). They don't make this update very clear (if at all) and this could mislead lots of folks (their training videos have not been updated since 2007, to reflect the aforementioned.)

    A Very Grateful Subscriber,

    J.B. Malik

[[reply from Jim]]: the google update isn't an issue because it hasn't really affected the system. It doesn't change most of the strategies they talk about, and it doesn't affect

most people's ability to make money with it.

The system shows you where others are making money and takes you step by step through the process.

If you have problems with a refund see email me personally – I always back up the products I promote. With hundreds of thousands of transactions online over the last decade you won't find one customer ever complaining online anywhere about not getting a refund if they requested one.

It is truly shameful what the so called gurus of internet marketing are doing to the unsuspecting people who feel the economic pinch and are desperately trying to find new sources of income.

The only 2 Newsletters & blogs I read and still subscribe to are Jim Cockrum's & Rosalind Gardner… The rest are just scams in my book.

And to all those reading my comment , 2 pieces of advice

1-be weary of spending a single dime with anyone who is not readily accessible by telephone & email.

2- Always check your credit card statements … because some of those internet gurus , if you ever bought anything from them and they have your credit card , in a few months they could be charging your credit cards with monthly recurring charges without your authorization.

It happened to me twice . The first was Joel Comm… I bought a $10.00 ebook from him, three months later they started charging my credit card $29.00 .. But at least there they have a telephone # with real people answering and they refunded me and stopped.

The other is mindvalleylabs …. I bought a software from them .It did not work. It took American Express 3 months to get me my refund.. Now for the past 3 months they have been charging my Amex $47.00 every month. They cannot be contacted by any method . I even placed comments about the subject on their blog and no response … I had to file a Fraud charge against them.

So be careful all you guys & gals out there. Listen to Jim

buy his book , he deals in real stuff that could help and is not in the business of selling garbage and scamming people.

Good job Jim.. Integrity takes you places .

Hi Jim, Great advice Jim and the rest of the members here – and absolutely agree with the positive comments. Just a curiosity, has anyone tried this CPA business? If you did, what's the outcome?

  • http://www.cnc-programming.co.uk Ishaq

Greed unfortunately nullifies integrity in most of so-called internet gurus.

Just look at all the top guys – say Mike Filsaime (very nice guy)- bombarding you with products, mostly other peoples, nearly everyday.

Jim you come as a breath of fresh air.

  • http://www.bestdogvideos.info Paul

    Jim,

As many have posted, it is a breath of fresh air NOT to be bombarded by you for every new launch the gurus promote seemingly every day. If most people would ignore the daily distractions and focus on one thing then they would find that the success that has eluded them will finally find them. There are many ways to make money but being successful requires a plan, taking action, and persistence in pursing that plan.

  • http://www.smallbusinessmarketinguide.com Paul

    Jim,

Over the internet years, I've seen a lot of hype, subscribed to too many ezines and canceled most of them.

Many of us are definitely burned out on the guru hype of the launch of the day. You are one of the very few internet marketers whose recommendations I can trust.

I just thought of something along those lines… The people I do trust are selling step-by-step systems and strategies that are proven over time. The hyped products so often seem to be about the trick of the month!

    All the best!

    Paul

I just learned about Jim and his newsletter. I read his blog regarding large promotions. And I fully agree with him. I myself only touch well-tested opportunities. There is simply too much risk otherwise.

    Hi Jim,

    7/24/2009

Everything you wrote "way back then" applies today. I enjoy the $49 to $97 product Gurus who within weeks of me getting on their list promote a $2,000 progam. Its a fast track to the trash bin and loss of a customer forever.

  • http://www.thinkpadtoday.com Ian

Hi Jim, just read your email about the 'big launch' syndrome.

Quite frankly it sickens me. This code, that assassination, the next loophole. I have been marketing on the internet for 5 1/2 years, starting with eBay of course and the Silent Sales Machine.

What I find most appalling is the often 'half truths' that are told in these launches. The staff and the investment it takes to achieve the figures that are being quoted is the first thing that springs to mind.

Now don't get me wrong, all of this stuff works, its just the way its sold and hyped thats wrong, with bonus wars that make me puke.

There is a real hunger out there for knowledge on how to make money on the Internet and to me the way all this stuff is being sold right now has huge similarities to the MLM fever that swept the 70's and 80's

    Mass Control indeed.

My personal challenge is, I don't know what to do about it. There are some great people out there like yourself Jim, Jack Humphreys (and even Jack has succumbed to a couple of hypy launches this year), Dan Thies amongst others.

The knowledge they and you impart is superb.

My own personal solution if I see something that looks great and I want to buy it is first off to keep my Credit card in my wallet for 24 hours, or just not buy it if its not a tool thats supports or moves our current business goals forward.

We have a small network of authority blogs in the Technology sector, which is my passion. Its been blood sweat and tears getting it off the ground, but business is UP 42% this year and we will sell over $3 million dollars wroth of product, earning well over 6 figures.

I have personally intensively coached friends (for free!)who have started to repeat the process, but its hard work because there is so much to learn, and the learning curve is steep.

And thats my final gripe with the big launches, they make it all sound so easy and its far from that, and thats where the disappoint sets in.

The rewards are huge, but we do need to keep perspective. Maybe I should stop selling real products to real people and start a coaching club?

And sell my soul to the IM devil? Maybe not.

Keep up the good work Jim.

    Cheers, Ian Orford

Well Jim, I have been checking out what you say about big launches and i have come into the ones i wanted. I have notice that i get every new product in the market sent to me but i do not buy. I am busy trying to build my own business and want to treat my customers as a good friend. I do not buy much of anything anymore until i know i need it. I have look at some many emails i get and most i know is just a pitch to sell me. What happen to giving me information or teaching me so that i know you looking out for me and not your own pocket book.

    Thanks Jim,

  • Judy

Thank you for being so honest and truthful. I agree wholeheartedly, you made the right decision. I receive a ton of emails every day and most I just delete. I would only touch opportunities that are well-tested and through folks that have earned my trust. The risk is too great.

    Jim,

I agree with you 100%. It seems that so many "Guru's" jump on EVERY product that pays a decent commission (especially with the rash of membership sites), even though they have NO idea whether what they are promoting works or not – because they haven't actually reviewed it. First, I must admit that I post as rarely as I buy, even though I respect many of the experts who are recommending these products. I’m sure that it’s a good thing I limit my blogging becuase I usually have more to say the invitation to comment intended.
The price tags for these products and memberships are way over my head (helps keep me from throwing good money after bad, though.) Were I endowed with unlimited wealth, I would find it interesting to join and learn and participate in all of the groups.
I have joined ONLY MySilentTeam (a few months ago at the recommendation of Skip McGrath whom I trust implicitly). I belong to NO other paid subscriptions because I do not have the money to spend nor the time to read them all. (I do sign up for free trials that I consider worthwhile, and I do cancel them before I have to pay.)
I am a one person operation, struggling to grow my business with no capital to invest.
I burn the midnight oil as it is, and I have to spend my time listing. Yes, you need an audience, but having an audience with nothing to show them doesn’t work either. I have email addresses for every customer I have had, but I have not been able to organize them and keep up with my listings, so I know I would not have time to maintain a subscriber site.
I had $3000 in the Fall of 2007, but I spent it buying things that didn’t really tell me anything. I wish I had found Skip and you, Jim, earlier. I have only sold on eBay, and finally made first level PS in January by following Skip’s advice. None of my customers are repeat but I must be getting referrals. June was tough, and I have uploaded to Bonanzle. I tweet once in awhile and have not been able to get a web site up yet (another nightmare story).

My opinion is that the income of all of these gurus is down in this economy (not as many subscribers signing up at $800/month), and they promote good products but not always necessary products. The price tags are outrageous because the affiliate commission checks are huge, and most are giving people information that is available for free (albeit the product format makes it easier to find and use).
I subscribe to many of the expert’s mailing lists, and read all of the free information, and watch all of the free videos into the wee hours.

A very few of the products I would buy if I had the money, but I don’t, and I won’t borrow it right now because I sell products, not information, and have to spend very carefully and budget my time very carefully through this next holiday season. I have a niche idea that I am trying to develop after much research, and finding suppliers whose customer service standards match my own is my biggest challenge.

So thank you, Jim, for telling it like it is. It’s kinda’ like buying skin care and cosmetics. Each and every product is “necessary” for your health and beauty, but NO ONE can tell you in what order to apply them, and if you apply them all, you exhaust all of your money and time, have many layers of “gunk” on your face, and still don’t see the results you wanted.

Most of the time one or two would have worked nicely, but no one associated with marketing them or providing customer service will tell you which ones you need under which circumstances.

It’s easy to tell what is outright junk. The tough call is to figure out which good product to start with, and when to stop buying them. I would like to see information on how to prioritize spending so that all of your profits aren’t eaten up buying stuff to increase your profits.
Many many pass your test, but not even ALL of those are needed by everyone (and maybe not by anyone). I tend to trust the folks who send info on a new product and tell you that you don’t need it IF you already have…

Hope I haven’t outworn my welcome with my first post.

  • http://www.u2cando.info/ebay.html Ben Ramsey

    Hey Jim,
This may have been written months ago, but it is STILL spot on TODAY and will stay spot on.

Seems to me that the “BIG LAUNCH” in it’s self is a business model that the Big Name Guy’s all use, I have watch it for years.

That is why NOW I am on very few lists, and I only deal with a few Newsletters. Your’s being at the Top, I hardley ever go to certain forums anymore that I use to go to every day!
I am a Member of MST, and I only consider dealing with what YOU are getting behind

The BIG LAUNCH has not changed….and thank God, neither have YOU Jim! thanks for watching out for all your Peeps, and looking long term for all of us!

  • http://www.susan-may.com Susan May

I haven'g read any of the comments so I hope it is not a repeat but I will just speak from the heart and if it has already been said then I'm sorry.

First of all, I got sucked into the big launches too many times to count and in the end all I got from them was information overload – to the tenth power. I now know (from listening to your and like minded people's) advice that not only have I saved a ton of money, it has allowed to go "back to the basics" of Internet Marketing. Simple and steady really does do the trick! Now for your question, "do I think you are crazy?" Absolutely not and I admire your willingness to tell people the TRUTH even if it costs you a few dollars here and there.

Thanks for everything you do for all of us!

    Jim,

This is stellar advice. I’m sure most folks are frustrated with the amount of emails all promoting the same launch. I came to the conclusion that most of the emails I was receiving were from marketers pitching the same products I already have access to. Sometimes you can forget why you signed up for a particular newsletter because all you get are affiliate promotions. My “unsubscribe” session felt really good.

  • http://www.ademartin.com/ Ade Martin

As usual this is great information from you and as valid now as when first posted, perhaps even more so.

I hope you don't mind me posting a link here on your blog but I did a rather long 2 part post a while back that Michael Fortin was kind enough to leave a good comment on and I feel it's part of this discussion. No offense taken if you remove the link.

I followed you for a while before signing on to both of your membership sites. I’ve jumped too quickly on one or two things earlier on and I’ve learned to take it “slow and easy”. Like one or two others, I’ve done my share of ‘unsubscribing’. There is a lot of good information out there, but a person can only absorb just so much. It’s like going to the supermarket, there are hundreds of items on the shelves, but you only take what you need. Keep the good stuff comin’. Meanwhile I’ll just be “Jim”: slow and easy.

  • http://wealthyaffiliatereviewer.com Sally

Thank you for having the intestinal fortitude to tell it like it is in public. Last week I went on an unsubscribe spree because of the constant barrage of lame promotions.

I don’t mind those that send a few emails with interesting or useful information between the promotions. After all, promoting is the reason for having an opt-in list in the and I don’t have a problem with that.

However, I do have a problem with having my intelligence insulted by internet marketers. I was amused by a previous post that mentioned a certain hideously overpriced (to the tune of 2 grand) marketing info package.

That is one my pet peeves and a shining example of what to avoid. There is nothing in it that can’t be purchased for a fraction of the price at Amazon and elsewhere. Good info – sure. Worth 2 grand – no way.

Keep up the good work, Jim. As you can see, I didn’t unsubscribe from your list during my spree.

I always feel like I am missing out on these launches, but the price is “way” too high for me to buy! These launches used to be $297,$497,$997. Now they are almost always $2-3K range or higher. Nice little profit for the guys selling at a 50% or better profit referral rate. 100 people buying a 3K product from their own list = $150,000 for not much work! Unfortunately Kern admitted that there is a group of these guys that work in groups on these lauches and help each other on planning, lauching and referring to make big profits. These big launches were like every 6 months, now it’s like several every month. The last is always the biggest and the best. There has to be a saturation point with these launches soon. I just don’t buy anymore because it is nearly impossible to make money with these products unless you are onboard selling them!

  • Lynn

January is traditionally the time for the inbox getting cluttered with “buy this new product and become a millionaire this year” but I don’t seem to have had too many this year. Maybe that’s because I unsubscribed from all the pushers’ lists.

Hi Jim, I think you’re absolutely ‘right’ in doing what you do. ETHICS appear to be disregarded in marketing these days even though ‘all’ of the Big-Dogs out there stress just how ‘ethical’ their offers are.

I’m not saying that they’re being dishonest, but they are all putting their neat and tidy ‘clique’ above everything else.

Lately though, I’ve noticed so much copy-cat-marketing from them, desperately trying to re-launch slightly modified versions of their old products that sold well in the past. Notices of retirement are now just getting SO BOOOORING as is the “Sorry, I just made a Boo-Boo” and “Sorry, that last E-mail had the wrong link” – Do they really think we’re all that thick?

This is where the ‘ethics’ come into play. It’s not ethical to treat subscribers in that manner, but ‘all’ of the main Guru’s are jumping on board.

Honest people like yourself are rare, but I believe will retain the ‘loyalty’ of all subscribers.

    Just a thought,

    Pete Moring.

Good for you Jim for not following the herd. I am so sick of offers, new product launches, time sensitive materials. 80 + emails a day, many are for the same offer with bonus deals if you buy from them. I think some of them sell your email because I haven’t subscribed to a lot of them.

When I release my product it will be so good it will sell itself, there would be a need to push people into buying or creating scarcity. They are getting too overpriced for us little guys and gals that there is no way we can afford them anyways. You are right about the doors re-opening, they want money, it will be back. It is just a ploy. I don’t buy anything until I have checked the IM Report Card.

You hit the nail on the head! I am sick of hearing about all these huge launches that are rarely anything more than a rehash of other products and services. I have bought a few of them and they really just provide principles and ideas for the most part, without really being something that real people can use and find real success with. I have been unsubscribing left and right myself. I have only seen a few individuals that I felt really cared about the people on their list. By the way you are one of the few. Thanks!

All the great launches are exactly as you state.
One week of blasts and gone forever.
Most of their “newsletters” are only sales pitches that have no real value to the reader.
Like others looking for good product and information my inbox is flooded with this junk daily.
Of the three newsletters i do read yours is always the first.
Thanks for confirming my thoughts concerning “the greatest program since whatever”

Any chance that MST would list the promotions to stay away from? I just got refunds from Mike Filasaime ’7 Figure Code’ and Dave Nicholson ‘Multi Profit Websites’. Both sounded great, but were only an expensive sales pitch for continued coaching. Very disappointing. I enjoy reading the newsletter from Eric Holmsrud.

[reply from Jim]: Believe it or not, by doing so I’m opening myself up to lawsuits! I can only tell you what I LIKE not what I don’t like. The task of identifying all of the products I don’t like would be daunting anyway…that’s why I do my own research before buying ANYTHING.

    Hey Jim.

I know I’m only finding this post now, wish I’d have found it earlier.

I purchased the course and give it every effort I could for the two month period.

When doing the course I ran into some problems along the way. Mostly with Google, so if Google wasn’t going to work with me which they wern’t, it was game over.

One more thing, as I said I give it every effort and when I contacted support I usually got a reply within two till three working days, BUT and the big BUT is?

When my 60 day guarantee was spent, that was it, when I emailed there wasn’t a word, Yip not a peep from anyone I was left to go it alone and what did that mean. Well if you can’t get support why bother tricking someone by false pretense.

I know this course might not be as big today, but the big guru’s know they have to revamp and move on with the speed of the Internet today. So there’s always going to be new products coming at you every other week, BE SMART don’t get fooled.

I advise to give Jim’s post another read before you move on with any decision of purchasing from these big guru’s. THINK TWICE and take it from someone that’s been there. This product cost me $1997 and it’s now sitting idle on my desktop.

    Eamon.
