One of the aspects of my position that I take very seriously is to make sure I promote only the BEST products and services. I turn away many GOOD products and promote only the GREAT ones. I love it when someone takes the time to notice the effort.

My wife and I (she is CEO) have a successful IT Infrastructure company with 10 employees. We are the company that set up server rooms run the wiring for phone systems and computers. Many of the items he’s selling are simple DVD projects that could be done easily by just about anyone. The profit margin is astounding, and he’s building a great niche business.

Typically this blog is dedicated 99% to “business” stuff, but here’s a personal note. My family and I have been in Guatemala for a few months now finalizing the adoption of our precious little angel “Aven” (for the full story on that check out my wife’s blog here). Most of our time in Guatemala has been spent in Antigua. While we were in Antigua I made some great friends (see pic) - and they all speak Spanish, but want to learn English. The church we attended while in town offered a free class to any interested locals that wanted to learn to speak English…and although I know very little Spanish I volunteered and it turned out to be a great time for all!

It was a pleasure getting to know them and I’m sure I’ll miss them all terribly. I’m grateful for the supporters of this blog, my customers, and the fans of my books that have made such an extended trip for my family and I possible.

Hola mi amigos! Keep speaking English and come visit me in the U.S. someday!! Gracias! Mucho Gusto!!

Business note: One cool development from this trip is the discovery of some amazing hand made items that I’ll be adding soon to my eBay inventory to sell. The quality is amazing and the prices are incredible. It’s exciting to continue my relationship with this vibrant culture even though we are leaving soon.

Every few weeks or so I get an email from MySilentTeam.com contributing expert Terrance about another great example of someone selling a simple home made DVD successfully on eBay. He’s got a great book about it and it’s inspiring some cool success stories.

The beauty of having your own DVD to sell on eBay is the ease of adding inventory (just burn more copies) and the high profit margins. You don’t have to be technically skilled either - you can keep it all pretty simple.

Here’s some recent results from one fan of Terrance’s approach to eBay success:

You may think that $14.95 is a small profit, but keep in mind you can make as many different DVD’s as you want and there are over 12 other ways to profit besides just selling them on eBay. You could start a membership site, or have a related simple webpage with additional info covered with Google Adsense ads, or start a mailing list for enthusiasts…the ideas are endless. A DVD is a great niche product to build a business around.

Don’t worry about editing. Terrance does virtually NO editing on some of his most successful DVD projects. It can be as simple as point, shoot, and rewind if you want to cut something out.

Looking for ideas? Terrance suggests hitting local events and festivals. Interview the enthusiasts there (always ready to talk) and take footage of the sights and sounds. True fans will eat it up. After six years of books, newsletters, membership websites etc. I’ve come to know many of you quite well.

I don’t share a lot of personal details typically outside of my membership site, but the past few days are full of the kinds of events that I need to share.

First some good news:

My wife Andrea and I spent some time the last few days in Guatemala visiting our soon to be daughter we’re naming Aven. This is our third international adoption. Here’s a website that we set up that tells more about our views on adoption and shows our other kiddos.

Here’s one of the first pictures of us together. It really says it all I think…

We also got some bad news this week however.

While we were out of country my grandma (we called her Mamaw) passed away.

Here’s the article from the local paper. I got the call from my dad that she had died literally a few hours after that picture of me above was taken. It was a strange mix of emotions for one day.

Her husband, Papaw died nearly two years ago.

Imagine the most honest, loving, caring and genuine people you’ve ever met. That was them. The long line of people that came to the viewing tonight (and for my Papaw) was testament to the many lives they’ve touched. In my Papaws final days I got to tell him that he had set the bar very high and I hoped I could be half the man he had been. He just smiled back because his strength was leaving him. If he could have spoken he would have said something about how proud he was of me. I could see it in his eyes.

My Mamaw went a bit more suddenly. As recently as a few weeks ago I told her that she would likely outlive us all. She loved life and loved people. She had even started her own business recently (now you know where I get the bug)!

The funeral is tomorrow though - reality has set in. Thankfully my family all knows for sure that she is in a better place in heaven with her savior and with her life long love Papaw. They were married young (she was 18) and they have been apart only two times since. Once for the time required of my Papaw as he served heroically in WWII and the second time for the 23 months between their passing. It’s a true love story.

My cousin also held a new baby daughter in his arms just hours before our mamaws passing. We agreed tonight that we can only hope that some of the loving, kind traits that our Mamaw displayed so effortlessly were passed on to our beautiful new daughters.
