Is affiliate marketing as we’ve come to know it dying?
First the bad news…then a bit of “I told you so…” good news.
Did you catch that “Opportunity.com” has been shut down? The owner, John Reese is a pioneer in the Internet marketing industry. He’s known as the first “guru” to pull down $1million in one day with a product launch (selling traffic generation secrets). Opportunity.com was designed to assist John’s huge online following with affiliate income strategies and was easily the biggest site of its kind. Now it’s gone. Why do you think this is?
Before you decide consider this…
I attended an “affiliate summit” last summer hoping to meet a bunch of successful affiliate marketers that could reassure me that the affiliate marketing game was viable for the “little guy”. I came away disappointed. I met large numbers of experienced and newbie online entrepreneurs that were struggling to make any serious affiliate income. In some cases they had been trying diligently and systematically for a very long time without success.
Others at the same summit told of overnight disasters going from great weekly incomes to ZERO because of a Google algorithm shift. It’s long been known that Google is getting very aggressive in punishing sites that “add no value” to the customer search experience (such as review sites, template sites and pretty much any other “easy” to set up site etc.)
Many “power tools” of Internet marketing are being “re-packed” away from Internet marketing.
IM (Internet Marketer) discussion forums are full of frustrated, broke (and VERY knowledgeable) wannabe affiliate marketers.
Yet the fact remains that one of the favorite pursuits of “IM’ers” and most of the best selling products produced by the “gurus” are Affiliate Marketing training! WHY? My theory: It’s because it’s so incredibly easy to fall for and to sell!
Don’t get me wrong.
There are affiliate marketers out there that are doing very well, but the 80/20 rule is clearly in full effect (more like 95/5 rule). I’d estimate that easily 5% or fewer of the
affiliate marketers of the world are making 95% or more of the profits.
Harsh Reality: It’s far easier to grow a large loyal audience than it is to earn affiliate income from random strangers
Affiliate marketing isn’t easy or stable in my opinion until and unless you have your own loyal audience. I’ve found NO affiliate training program worthy of my endorsement in the past few years because even if you know what you are doing it’s still a totally random process determining who succeeds and who doesn’t.
I’m not winning any new “guru” fans with this article, but I’m waiting on one of them to prove me wrong (hint: They can’t!)
There are so many other great ways to spend your time and energy building income streams that are stable, long term, ant that YOU control.
